Why Relay Runners Face a Unique Set of Risks
Here's something that surprises a lot of people outside the relay world: relay runners aren't just short-distance sprinters doing the same thing over and over. Depending on your event, you might be a 400m specialist who also has to master a standing start, accelerate into an exchange zone, and decelerate after the pass—all while managing nerves and race-day adrenaline.
That combination of explosive acceleration, abrupt deceleration, and technical precision creates stress patterns that solo runners rarely encounter. Exchange zones are chaotic, especially in youth and high school relays. Runners are moving at speed, watching over their shoulders, and sometimes stepping on lane lines or uneven track surfaces. Lateral ankle sprains are a predictable consequence.
Strength training for ankle stability—single-leg balance work, resistance band exercises—is a practical preventive measure. So is making sure exchange zone practice happens in realistic race conditions, not just in slow-motion rehearsal.
